YOUTH CENTER HELPS WOMEN WITH CAHRLIE'S CANCER
 |
From 14th to 16th of May in Bankja was held the fourth seminar for group therapy and training. Groups for psychological support cooperated for the gratuitous surmounting of the shock of the disease.

Friendship Youth Centre, established in 1995, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help people with various psychological and social problems. Seminars for teachers, for parents that have problems with the upbringing of their children, work with prisoners - these are only some of the projects of the Center that have had positive results.
During the past decades the different types of cancer, including Charlie's cancer, registered serious growth in the number of the diseased. Charlie's cancer affects about 3000 Bulgarian women, and the total count of the diseased is between 20000 and 26000, mostly 40 - 70 years old. A special project is started to help them cope with the stress. Its target group is consisted of women that have suffered from Charlie's cancer. It is realized with the financial assistance of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Sofia and with the cooperation of the National Institute of Oncology.
"The project consists of two forms of work with the women - group training and special groups for psychological help. The age of the sufferers is dropping constantly and there are 20 - 30-year-olds with such diagnosis. Some of them have not given birth yet, which worsens their mental adaptation," explains the project leader Rumjana Milkova.
At the first seminar in the beginning of the year was held a psychological training with 20 women that includes reacting to different situations in which the women are given the opportunity to express freely their feelings not having to hide anger and other negative emotions.
"The Bulgarian women care more for the others than for themselves," says Rumjana Milkova and adds that she met a young woman from Burgas at the seminar who was afraid to leave her family alone for several days because she was unsure whether her husband and children will be able to cope with the everyday work. It turned out that her fears were unsubstantiated and she looked for medical help on time and took care of herself.
"Our training groups include different forms of relaxation like yogi, Dao and Tibetan exercises. All of this was demonstrated at the seminar held in Bankja from 14th to 16th of May. It is very important that we could involve women that live more that 7 years after the surgery and they give courage to all that are afraid to admit their problems," continues Mrs. Milkova.
The second part of the project, when groups for mutual help will be set up, will help the adaptation to the disease too. The groups will gather once a week at the office of the Association of applied psychology. In this way the women will get used to communicating with each other, to share their problems, assisted by an experienced psychologist. It is a good idea volunteers to work with the patients before and after the surgery, which is the period of the greatest shock, and the support should start in the hospital.
The people who want to enter these groups for psychological support can call Mrs. Milkova at 870-18-89 and then she will give you more details on the dates of the meetings. Everything is free and all that you need to do is say "I am diseased, but together we can overcome the troubles and continue living our lives. For the sake of all the good things that are ahead of us and the people we love."

SCHOOL FOR PARENTS ESTABLISHED

Puberty intensifies the conflicts, psychologists draw new model for family relationships
Author: Maria Neznakomova,
24 Hours, 29th of March, 1998 |
What must the parents do in order to have communication of full value with their children?
First they must need it, according to Emilia Yotova and Rumiana Milkova from the Friendship Youth Centre in Sofia.
They have undertaken the realization of the program "Let's learn together" that they introduced to the control group of participants.
"All of us intuitively find some of the correct approaches in the contacts with our children but there are much more skills for better communication between the different generations that we need to have," says Milkova.
The two specialists want to teach the parents how to analyze and find solutions for the inevitable conflicts between the generations.
While working as a school psychiatrist, Milkova made research of the main conflict situations in a child's life. She picked randomly one class from each grade from 1st to 11th and asked the students to describe anonymously one everyday conflict.
It turned out that before the age of 11-12 the central part of children's minds is taken from conflicts between themselves and other children in the same age - classmates or friends from the neighborhood. Although with the beginning of puberty, the scale of arguments with the parents starts to increase dramatically.
"This is easy to explain. From this age on the desire for personal freedom of the children is much bigger than the willingness of their parents to provide this freedom," says Milkova.
Strange it may be, but in her inquiry there were no conflicts with teachers mentioned, except for some extreme cases of inadequate behavior of the teacher.
In School for Parents the "classes" will be made up of 8 - 15 people who will get together every week to discuss typical conflict situations and share their personal experience, and also to learn concrete psychological techniques that will help them in their relations with the children.
"The word "conflict" carries strong negative meaning. From the psychologist's point of view it means clash of positions which has many positive elements too. The goal is not to avoid the conflict which is impossible, but to find different ways of settling it. The evaded or not settled on time argument accumulates aggression in both parties," explains Milkova.
According to the two psychologists, the people who show interest in their innovatory initiative are mostly from average families. The conflicts with their children are far from an insurmountable disruption, but the desire for improving of the parental skills seems to be biggest in this stratum.
Every learned technique is to be practiced at home and the outcome will be discussed at the next meeting.
"The children feel very well when a certain behavior starts to provoke a certain reaction from the parents. They use this fact to achieve the effect every time. But when the parents' behavior changes they are shocked," says Emilia Yotova.
It is this change of the behavior that must be achieved in the course of training which is 2 and half months.
The final target of the teaching is the substitution of the remnants of the authoritarian model of the family with equal in rights communication and mutual respect and tolerance.
"The stronger the warship, the stronger the resistance of the young person. His freedom right must be respected, but he also must be taught to take the responsibility of this freedom so that we will not be afraid for him when he goes out in the street tomorrow," claim the organizers of the school.
The program is American, but several years ago was adapted for our conditions from the Association of the psychologists in Bulgaria, however it has not been realized so far.
