Learn more about: 2003-2004 - Psychological and social support for women suffering from Charlie's cancer.   2003-2004 PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR WOMEN SUFFERING FROM CHARLIE'S CANCER Friendship Youth Centre has realized 14 educational and social projects. Now we are working on the 15th project - for women suffering from Charlie's cancer. In Bulgaria these women don't have the opportunity to participate in various groups for psychological and social support as in other European countries. The healthcare system in Bulgaria is focused on the medical aspects more than on the psychological and social ones. The latter are underdeveloped, misunderstood and neglected in Bulgarian society. In this sense, the psychological and social needs of women suffering from Charlie's cancer can't be satisfied. They need emotional support, especially during the first stages of the disease, immediately after the diagnosis. These women need to share their feelings and to find motivation for new life. The project provides them with psychological and social support in accordance with the European practices and models of care. The different forms of the group therapy include consulting with women in the phase of recovery. The project activities are: Training courses for adaptation - duration 2 days. We organized 4 training courses with 40 participants. During the courses the women received professional support and were given the possibility to perceive the disease and advice on how to cope with it. Training courses "Change for life" - duration 2 days. These training courses aim to motivate and support the participants in their hard work towards personal change needed for the recovery and new life. Supporting groups - 2 times per month for 2 hours each. The supporting groups aim to maintain the positive attitude and changes in the recovery process. Individual consultations - they satisfy the individual emotional needs of the patients of professional psychological help. There are on-line and personal consultations. We invite all women who suffer from Charlie's cancer to participate in the project at the website of the Friendship Youth Centre. The participation in the training courses will give the women the chance to become a part of their own treatment programs, to look at the disease as an opportunity to transform their lives, to focus their attention and efforts on the process of recovery, to recognize, accept, and express their feelings. We welcome women that have recovered from the disease to register at our website if they volunteer to help the women who are currently suffering from Charlie's cancer. If you are healthy and you want to help, please join our project. Please share your opinion on the suggested topics with reference to the disease. TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE TRAINING We offer to your kind attention the following TOPICS: * HOW DID THE DISEASE CHANGE MY LIFE? See the answers of the participants: And what do you think? - I started to take better care of myself. - I became selfish and started to put myself in first place. - It enriched my personality. - I love myself more. - I think that life is wonderful and continues. - The best things in my life happened to me after the disease. - God is with me and protects me. - Now I think positive and try to enjoy life. - I don't care much for other people's opinion. - Life is mine and I live it my way. - There is no malice in me and what I've gone through made me happier. - I set short-time goals and achieve them. PATIENT'S RIGHTS CHARTER Here are the participants' suggestions. Please give yours also. - The right to be informed about the disease and the treatment; the patient has to be consent to all of the needed surgical and other interventions. - The medical stuff's attitude towards the patients must be kind, attentive, and tolerant. - The right of psychological support throughout the whole process of coping with the disease. - The right to have associations and unions of the diseased for helping each other. - The right of voluntary help from healthy people in the hospital and afterwards. - The need of social work in and outside of the hospital: explaining to the diseased what should be their next steps. FEEDBACK FROM THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE TRAININGS 80%-100% of the participants in the seminars evaluated the trainings as very useful. At the end of the seminars the participants felt satisfied, motivated, confident, relaxed, interested, enthusiastic, stimulated.
